UOIT is making history by opening the ACE Climatic Wind Tunnel to the public as part of Open Doors Oshawa.
The yearly community event allows the public to have free access to community buildings and locations they otherwise couldn’t see.
This year marks the first time the community can tour the ACE Climatic Wind Tunnel at UOIT. In the past, ACE wasn’t open to the public due to testing conducted there by companies who rent the space.
“Because a lot of the testing that happens is proprietary, they’re protective,” said Bryan Oliver, communications officer at UOIT. “They may be working on a product that’s exclusive to their company. That’s why ACE is not typically a place where the doors are always open.”
The ACE wind tunnel has five chambers where researchers can study and test everything from vehicles to human physical performance in a variety of weather conditions. These tests are conducted by simulating rain, wind, snow, blizzards and extreme temperatures.
Daniella Petralito, ACE intern and communications and visual media studies student at UOIT, will help lead the tour.
“I think it’s important that people learn about our facility, it’s so one-of-a-kind,” said Petralito. “UOIT and especially the ACE wind tunnel has so much to offer, not just for students, but the whole community as well.”
All of the chambers will be open with the exception of one, a small climate chamber which will be in use by one of ACE’s partners.
Doors will be open at UOIT from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29. Some other Open Doors locations include Camp X, Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame, the Islamic Centre of Oshawa, and more.
