The election for next Durham College (DC) student to serve on the student board of governors is right around the corner.
Eleven candidates have entered the race with biographies available on the DC student governor’s website. Currently in the running are Brad Abel, Samuel Braithwaite, Kevin Brown, Jordan Ella, Navleen Kaur, Ihor Matsehora, Takiis Mills, Olivia Pigden, Gurpreet Singh, Lindsay Trudell and Brett Whittick.
All of them are Durham College students with the exception of Whittick, who belongs to the Alternative Dispute Resolution Institute of Ontario.
Only one will be chosen for the position and will join a team of 17 on DC’s board of governors. The board consists of 12 external members and four internal, including faculty and one student.
The responsibility of the student governor is to make decisions in the best interest of the entire college, such as approving the annual budget, business plan and annual report, says Pringle. Unlike Durham College Students Inc., candidates will not be running on a platform and will not advocate for student-specific issues or services, says Pringle.
To be considered eligible to run for student governor, candidates must be enrolled at DC, be in good academic standing and have all of their student fees paid by the time nominations close. Candidates will be able to run their campaign under the guidelines on the DC student governor page, says DC’s Melissa Pringle.
The rules set word counts on statements and messages while also be placing emphasis on avoiding offensive or inaccurate information.
Students will be able to vote online Oct. 15 at 8 a.m until Oct. 19 at 4:30 p.m. on the DC student board of governors page when the campaign period ends. The results will be announced Oct. 25. Link to story
